Things You Must Know When You Plan to Own Your Own Truck

Owner-Operators

You may think that you would prefer to own your own truck. Maybe after spending some time in the trucking profession you will still feel that way, but starting out as an owner-operator is not very practical and probably not very wise. Not only will you have all of the concerns and problems of company drivers, but you will also have a large debt to service, which can put you in a bad position from time to time. A $1,500-2,000 payment each month can put a lot weight on one's shoulders.

If after some time in the profession you still want to be an owner-operator so that you can drive the truck you want and do things your way, do considerable research first. Some of your options will be to lease on with a company, run under your own authority, find a steady haul, or get your loads through a broker. No matter which route you take, there will be a lot to learn.

There are several companies that will let you lease-purchase a truck through them, but if you notice, you may have talked to many more drivers who have had bad experiences doing this than those who have had good experiences. Don't jump into one of these deals just to get a nice truck. It is important to find out from other owner- operators in the program if they are consistently generating enough money to service their debt and still making a living. Another important question is whether or not you can take the truck and work somewhere else before the truck is paid off. It would be prudent to gather some experience in the field before considering a lease-purchase arrangement.

Don't forget that when you are dreaming about rolling down the road in your own shiny rig you need to be a serious business person who understands what it takes to be successful.
